About Facials

Facials were once considered luxury only for the wealthy but now they are considered as important as going to your dentist. They are known to help resolve current problems and prevent future ones.

Plan to arrive to your first appointment about 5-10 minutes early, you will need to fill out a Client Care questionnaire of contact information, allergies, medications that you are currently taking and other items that the Esthetician feels is important that may effect your treatment (view/print form or enter information securely on-line). The Esthetician will evaluate your skin using a magnify lamp, will talk with you about your goals for your skin and make a recommendation for skincare products and treatments to help you reach those goals.

A facial generally consists of a cleansing, exfoliation, steam (in the form of warm towels or a machine), massage and a treatment mask. Facials can improve the texture, feel and look of your skin. Your face will have a healthy glow and feel smooth and refreshed. Massage is a very relaxing way to help improve your skin. Massage exfoliates the skin, reduces puffiness and sagging, tones muscle and stimulates blood flow to increase cell renewal. Facials are recommend once a month to maintain and help slow down the aging process. At the beginning for your treatments, you may need to come more frequently if there is a specific problem that needs to be resolved before your once-a-month maintance routine sets in. The last part of your facial should consist of sun protection; this could be in the form of a moisturizing SPF or Mineral Make-up. Proper sun protection is one of the most important things you can do for your skin.

The Basic Steps of a Classic Facial

A facial involves a few basic steps:

  • cleansing
  • skin analysis, where the esthetician puts eyepads over your eyes and looks at your skin through a brightly lit magnifying lamp
  • exfoliation, usually while a steam vapor is directed at your face.
  • extraction of blackheads if you want it and it's suitable for your skin type. (It can cause broken capillaries and discoloration if done on sensitive skin, or done improperly.) People have different pain tolerance for extractions. They can be uncomfortable, especially on thin or ruddy skin. (Not included with Mini,Express or Anti-Aging facials)
  • facial massage to relax you and stimulate your skin and facial muscles (not included with Mini or Express facials)
  • a masque targeted to your skin type (dry, oily, combination, sensitive, mature.) (not included with Express Facials)
  • application of toners and protective creams
  • advice on home skin care

Who Gives A Facial?

A facial is given by a licensed esthetician with special training in skin care.

How Often Should I Get A Facial?

It varies from person to person. Ideally, get a facial every four to six weeks because that's how long it takes the skin to regenerate. Try to have a facial at least four times a year, as the season changes. You may need it more frequently if you are trying to clear up a case of acne, especially at the beginning. Otherwise, once a month is plenty. You can overdo it.

Variations on the Basic Facial

Variations on the classic basic facial include the mini-facial (cleansing without extraction or massage) and specialty facials. Add vitamins A & C, and you have an "anti-aging" facial. Acne prone skin will have a "problematic" facial which will pay special attention to extractions.
