Hyperpigmented and Uneven Skin Tone Hyperpigmentation is a common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms deposits in the skin. Hyperpigmentation can affect the skin color of people of any race. Changes in skin color can result from outside causes. For example, skin diseases such as acne may leave dark spots after the condition clears. Other causes of dark spots are injuries to the skin, including some surgeries. Freckles are small brown spots that can appear anywhere on the body, but are most common on the face and arms. Freckles are an inherited characteristic. For many years, hydroquinone has been considered one of the most effective skin-lightening agents, however, much attention is now focused on its safety. Not only is safety an issue, but many individuals are allergic to hydroquinone, and others experience serious contact dermatitis with repeated use. Investigating two oligopeptides known as P3 and P4, researchers from California's Elixir Institute of Regenerative Medicine found that they not only bind to tyrosinase like hydroquinone, but they do so with no toxic effects. Even more impressive, however, is the evidence that these oligopeptides are up to 17 times more potent than hydroquinone. Researched and developed by The International Dermal Institute, ChromaWhite TRx™ delivers skin brightening results without the use of potentially damaging “lightening” ingredients that can impact skin health. In addition to many ingredients that have proven to safely and effectively treat hyperpigmentation, Dermalogica is very excited to be the first to use Oligopeptide-34, an exciting new ingredient that works to reduce pigmentation by decreasing melanin synthesis within on a cellular level for brighter, more even skin. The ChromaWhite TRx™ treatment plan will be most effective when delivered with a series of professional skin treatments and a scrupulous home regimen. A professional skin care therapist will outline a precise treatment regiment, both in the treatment room and at-home for the greatest success.
