Bikini waxing might seem like a procedure invented by the Marquis de Sade, but some women view it as necessary grooming, especially during swimsuit season.

Basic Bikini
This styles involves the removal of hair around the top and sides of the bikini line. Some have further excess hair inside the legs on the thighs removed as well. The procedure was made common as the wearing of bikinis became popular. |

Brazilian Bikini
The technique is named for Brazil, the country in which it originated. It was first used for women wanting to wear the then-new thong bikinis. This style calls for the complete removal of hair adjacent to the anus, perineum and vulva. It can be thought of as an extreme form of bikini waxing. Most forms of Brazilian waxing leave a small line of pubic hair (landing strip) above the vulva. Many women often opt for a Brazilian bikini wax because it produces clean, long lasting results.. |

Full Brazilian
Taking the Brazilian to the next step, many have all the hair removed from the entire area, creating a completely clean and smooth look. |

The procedure
Starts with baby or talcum powder being spread liberally over the area to be waxed. This prevents the hot wax from sticking to the sensitive skin. Then, as in other forms of waxing, hot wax is spread over the area from which hair is to be removed. The wax is allowed to harden briefly, then one edge of the wax strip is pulled up and used as a tab to quickly pull off or zip the rest of the wax, in the direction opposite of hair growth.
Then the procedure progresses to systematically removing the hair from the genital area, buttocks, and anus. This procedure removes the wax, hair, and any dead skin cells lying on the skin surface. The person performing the wax will then finish with tweezers to remove any stray hairs that the waxing missed. Finally, the remaining pubic hair (the so-called "landing strip") is either trimmed with scissors, or waxed off. The pain involved with this procedure can be slight or severe and can continue for quite some time (from several seconds to minutes). Some claim to perceive less pain during subsequent treatments. Because it can be painful, some estheticians suggest taking ibuprofen one hour before the wax.

Before your waxing appointment
- Start off slowly. Your first bikini wax is not the time to try a Brazilian. If you're new to waxing, go with a basic bikini wax. You can always decide to remove more the next time around.
- Grow your hair out for several weeks before waxing . If you are used to shaving your bikini line, stop this practice for several weeks to several months before getting a Brazilian wax for the best results. For a clean look and feel, it is important that the hair is long enough (approx. 1/8th of an inch) to be ripped fully out from the root, or else shorter hair gets left behind leaving the skin looking and feeling patchy.
- Keep your Skin Moisturized. Dry skin can end up feeling itchy and irritated after an intensive wax. Be sure to moisturize your skin well before a wax for healthy, soft skin afterwards.
- Plan to wax after your period. Your pain threshold is higher in the week after your period than beforehand.
- Shower and lightly exfoliate your entire bikini area right before your appointment using warm, not hot water. Make sure you’re extra clean. Don’t use any lotions in bikini area.

During your waxing appointment
- Don't be embarrassed. Like your doctor, anyone specializing in 'extreme' bikini waxing has seen it all before (literally) and will do their best to put you at ease.
- Breathe. It can be tempting to hold your breath, but breathing in and out helps reduce the pain. Take a deep breath in when the wax goes on, then breathe out when your esthetician gives it a yank
- Speak up. A good esthetician will work with you to make sure you're as comfortable as you can be. Don't be shy to say something if you have a low pain tolerance—it's better to speak up than to suffer in silence.
- Expect Discomfort. A Brazilian bikini wax is an intense experience. The first time is definitely the hardest, because much of the hair has never been pulled out before, even if you had a less extensive bikini wax in the past. Know that the pain is very temporary, and by the time you leave the salon, you should not feel any discomfort at all.
- Turn your head and cough. When the wax is about to be ripped off, cough. It distracts from the pain.

After your Waxing Appointment
- Allow your Skin to Breathe. After a Brazilian bikini wax, give your skin a chance to breathe and be comfortable. Your favorite pair of painted on jeans may not be the best choice for directly after your first wax. Wear loose fitting clothes and no synthetics, especially if you have easily irritated.
- Use Baby Powder to Soothe Skin. Baby powder is soothing to irritated bikini lines. Use some after your wax, and put some on before bed for a night free of irritation due to sweat and friction on the sensitive newly waxed skin.
- No hot baths for the rest of the day. No tanning beds, saunas or steam rooms for the next 2 days.
- EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE!!-- Tips to ingrown hairs
Starting 2 to 3 days after being waxed...exfoliate at least 2 to 3 times per week in the shower. Exfoliation will help get rid of the dead skin cells and help "lift" the hairs growing out. Pubic hairs are curly, and will either come out and grow right back into the skin or will try to embed themselves under the layers of dead skin cells. Either way, your skin does not recognize them as being part of your body...it views them as invaders, just like a splinter and will send the antibodies there to try to destroy it. You can also get yourselves a great pair of pointed tweezers...not to pluck, but to lift the ends of the hairs out. It is very important that you do not pluck or shave in between waxing if you want optimum results! A body brush is recommended. There are also products on the market such as organic scrub which can also aid in bumps and ingrown hairs.
